Product variants

Add sizes or versions of a product, each with its own price and stock status.

Published June 2, 2026

Variants are versions of the same product that a customer picks between, each with its own price. The classic example is pizza sizes: Small, Medium, Large. The customer chooses one before the item goes in the basket. This article shows you how to add and manage them on a product's Variants tab.

When to use variants

Use variants when the choice is "one or the other" and changes the price: sizes, portions, a 330ml versus a 500ml bottle. Each variant is a separate price point.

If instead you're offering optional extras the customer can stack on top (extra cheese, a dip, no onions), that's a job for modifier groups, not variants. See Modifier groups for those.

Add variants

  1. Open the product from Catalog → Product, then select the Variants tab.
  2. Press + Add variant for each version you want.
  3. Fill in each variant's Name (for example "Small"), its Price, and optionally a SKU for POS matching.
  4. Set the Stock status if needed (more on that below).
  5. Press Save variants.

The two-or-more rule

A product has either no variants or at least two. A single variant isn't allowed, because there'd be nothing to choose between. If you try to save with just one, you'll be asked to add another or remove it.

This also changes the Details tab: as soon as a product has variants, the single Price field on Details disappears and a note points you back here. The price now lives on each variant instead.

Order them

Variants show to customers in the order they're listed here. Use the Move up and Move down arrows on each row to arrange them, usually smallest or cheapest first. Delete removes a variant you no longer offer.

Stock per variant

Each variant has its own Stock status: Available, Sold out, or Unavailable. That means you can mark the Large as sold out for the night while Small and Medium keep selling. Stock status explains what each setting does on your storefront.
