Add a product

The full guide to adding a menu item: name, price, category, image, allergens and visibility.

Published June 2, 2026

This is the full guide to adding a menu item and filling in its Details tab: name, price, category, image, allergens and visibility. If you just want one item on your menu to get going, the shorter Add your first product covers the essentials. Come here when you want to understand every field.

Open the new product form

  1. In the sidebar, open Catalog → Product. This is the Products page, where every menu item is listed.
  2. Press Add product in the top right. You land on Add new product.

The Products page listing demo menu items with their category, price, active and stock columns, and the Add product and Import / Export buttons in the top right.

Fill in the Details tab

A new product opens on the Details tab. Only the name and price are required; everything else makes the item look right on your storefront and can be added later.

General Information

  • Product name (required): what customers see, for example "Margherita Pizza".
  • Description: a short line under the name. Keep it to the key ingredients.
  • Category: the menu section it sits under. Pick an existing one, choose No category, or use + Add a new category… to make one without leaving the page. See Create and order categories.
  • Price (£) (required): in your store's currency. The pound sign follows whatever currency you set in Business settings. If you give the product two or more variants, this field is replaced by a note pointing you to the Variants tab, because the price then lives on each variant.
  • SKU: optional. Used to match the product with a POS system like Square. Leave it blank if you don't use one.

Allergens & Dietary

Tick any of the 14 UK Food Safety Act allergens that apply, and switch on Dietary tags such as Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten free, Halal or Kosher. These show up on your storefront so customers can order with confidence. When you're editing an existing product, a Copy from product… dropdown lets you pull the same allergens across from a similar item instead of ticking them all again.

Product Image

Click the upload box to add a photo (JPG, PNG or WebP). A clear, well-lit shot of the dish does more for sales than anything else on this form.

Visibility

The Visible on storefront toggle controls whether customers can see the item. Leave it on to publish straight away, or switch it off while you finish the details.

When you're done, press Add product. The item appears on your storefront under its category.

What comes next

Once a product is saved, opening it for editing shows more tabs across the top: Variants, Modifiers, Related products and (on the Business plan) Location overrides. That's where sizes, add-ons, cross-sells and per-branch pricing live.
