Connect Square POS

Connect Square POS to sync your catalogue and push orders to the till (Business plan).

Published June 2, 2026

If you run a Square till in the shop, you can link it to MenuDock so your menu and your online orders stay in step with it. This article explains what the connection does, what syncs in which direction, and the limits to be aware of. POS connections are a Business plan feature.

Square POS is a separate link from Square card payments. You can use Square to take card payments without syncing your till, and you can sync your till while taking card payments through Stripe. They're set up independently.

What the connection does

Once linked, the Square POS connection works in two directions:

  • Catalogue sync (Square → MenuDock). You run a sync and MenuDock pulls your Square item catalogue in, creating or updating matching products on your menu. Items are matched first by a link from a previous sync, then by SKU, and anything with no match is added as a new product.
  • Order push (MenuDock → Square). When a customer pays for an online order, MenuDock sends it to your Square account so it shows up alongside your in-person sales.

Connecting

You connect from the Integrations page, with the branch you want selected in the location switcher first, since each branch has its own Square POS link.

  1. Open Integrations from the admin sidebar.
  2. Find the Square POS card in the POS section and press Connect.
  3. MenuDock sends you to Square to sign in and grant access. We store an encrypted token, never your Square login.
  4. Square returns you to the Integrations page and the card shows it's connected.

Once connected, the card shows your Square Merchant ID and Location, plus a Sync products button and a Disconnect button. After your first sync it also shows when you last synced and how many products came across.

Syncing your products

Press Sync products to pull your Square catalogue into MenuDock. The card reports how many products it synced. You can run it again whenever you change your Square menu, and it updates the items it has already linked rather than duplicating them. If you'd previously deleted a synced product in MenuDock, a re-sync won't bring it back.

What to know about synced products

Products that arrive from Square carry a marker showing Square as their source. Their name and price come from Square and a later sync can overwrite changes you make to those fields in MenuDock, so the till stays the source of truth for them. For the full picture of how these items behave and which fields you still control in MenuDock, read POS-synced products.

POS problems never stop an order

A POS link is a convenience, not a dependency. If Square is unreachable or the order push fails, the customer's order still goes through and still appears in your Orders and on the mobile app. The failure is recorded in the sync logs instead, so you can spot it and re-check later. See Read POS sync logs.

A note on availability

The underlying Square POS sync is newer than the rest of MenuDock and is still being verified. Depending on your account, the Square POS card may currently show as coming soon rather than offering a live Connect button. If it does, the feature isn't switched on for you yet. Card payments through Square are separate and available now; see Take payments with Square. If you need POS sync turned on, get in touch and we'll let you know where it stands.

Need a hand?

If a sync reports an error, open the sync logs and read the message on the failed row first, as it usually points straight at the cause. Still stuck? Email support@menudock.co.uk with your store name and roughly when you ran the sync.
