Take payments with Square

Connect Square to take card payments, with money paid straight to your Square account.

Published June 2, 2026

Square is the other card provider you can use with MenuDock (alongside Stripe). Connecting it lets customers pay by card at checkout, with the money paid straight into your own Square account. If you already run a Square till in the shop, this keeps your online and in-person takings in one place.

Card payments are part of every plan, so there is no upgrade needed to connect Square.

Connect Square

  1. Open Integrations from the admin sidebar.
  2. In the Payment provider section, find the Square card and press Connect Square.
  3. MenuDock sends you to Square sign-in. You grant this app permission to take payments on your behalf. We store an encrypted token, never your Square login.
  4. Square returns you to the Integrations page. When the link succeeds you see a "Square connected" confirmation and the card shows its status.

If you run more than one branch, set the location switcher to the branch you want before pressing Connect. Each branch links to its own Square account.

Reading the status

The badge on the Square card tells you where you stand:

  • Not connected — no Square account is linked yet. Press Connect Square to start.
  • Connected (no active location) — your account is linked, but MenuDock couldn't find an active location in your Square dashboard. Make sure at least one Square location is set to active, then press Refresh status.
  • Connected — Square is linked with an active location, but another provider is currently active.
  • Active — Square is linked and is the provider taking your card payments.

Square does not have a separate verification wait like Stripe. Once your account is linked and you have an active Square location, you are ready to take card payments. MenuDock reads your active location from Square when you refresh status.

Making Square the active provider

You can keep both Stripe and Square connected, but only one takes card payments at a time. If Square is connected but not active, its card shows a Use Square button. Press it to switch. MenuDock warns you first that card payments through the other provider will stop until you switch back.

Other controls

  • Refresh status re-checks with Square and updates the badge, including picking up your active Square location.
  • Disconnect clears the link. Card payments via Square are hidden from your checkout until you reconnect.

Once connected, the card shows your Square Merchant ID and Location, which is useful when cross-referencing with your Square dashboard.

Need a hand?

If Square sits at Connected (no active location), the fix is almost always in Square: open your Square dashboard, confirm a location is active, then come back and press Refresh status. Still stuck? Email support@menudock.co.uk with your store name and we'll take a look.
